DCJS 09E Advanced Handgun
All DCJS courses are open enrollment.
The DCJS 09E Advanced Handgun course will allow the student to carry or have immediate access to a firearm while on duty as a personal protection specialist.
All students who intend on participating in the 09E Advanced Handgun course must first complete the 07E Basic Handgun prior to the start date of 09E.
“An “Armed security officer” means a natural person employed to (i) safeguard and protect persons and property or (ii) deter theft, loss, or concealment of any tangible or intangible personal property on the premises he is contracted to protect, and who carries or has access to a firearm in the performance of his duties.” (Source: DCJS Administrative Code 6 VAC 20-171-10)
Course Time: 14 Hours (excluding written examination)
A. The entry level handgun training is a prerequisite for taking the advanced handgun training.
B. Advanced handgun classroom training will include but not be limited to
- Firearms safety
- Civil and criminal liability
- Concealed carry law and authority
- Function of firearms in close protection operations
- Deployment of firearms in close protection operations
- Use of force
- Principles of advanced marksmanship
- Decision-making for the personal protection specialist
DCJS 09R Advanced Handgun Re-qualification
Course Time: 8 Hours
The 09R is the advanced handgun in-service training.
1. Legal Authority and Decision-Making – 4 hours
2. Handgun Safety, Marksmanship, and Skill Development – 4 hours
